The NCAA has installed a new signing period for college football. For the first time this year, there is an early signing period that will last 72 hours from December 20-22.
The traditional period for high school seniors to formalize their commitment to a college football program was the first Wednesday of February. his period lasted until April 1. The National Letter of Intent was is usually signed on that Wednesday.
The NCAA believes that the new period allows players who want to end the recruiting process a chance to secure their binding commitment about six weeks in advance.
The NCAA says that by mid-December, most prospects are far enough along in the recruiting cycle that they have their minds made up about where they want to attend. They are tired of incessant texts and calls and want to have some certainty about their college destinations shortly after the fall semesters of their senior years.
