DE Gage Keys (2020) plays defensive end for Hilliard Davidson High School. Always thought of him as a possible D-1A football offensive lineman prospect, but he may be a better defensive end prospect. At 6’5-235 and the ability to run, he is better DE prospect.
Watched Gage play basketball last night against Olentangy High School. Wearing a big old knee brace limited his ability to run the court, to jump for rebounds, and to play strong inside. Being tough inside is what he enjoys, because he really loves basketball. Hoops may be his first love, but as he gets bigger/stronger and receives more football “offers,” he is starting to look at playing football on the next level.
According to his football coach, Brian White, Gage has attacked the weight room. He is working very hard and, most importantly, is focused on getting bigger/stronger/faster. In the Davidson program, toughness is must.
I talked with his dad last night about some of the Mid American Conference “offers” that he has received for football. Dad is a former Indiana High School basketball star who went on to have a career at Wake Forest. He now works with the freshman basketball program as a lay coach. He did have one football offer to Purdue. Dad is more open to football, now. Plus, dad understands to recruiting brown sugar.
Saw Gage play football in a scrimmage last August. He was thinner then, but he had good initial quickness off the ball. He ran through traffic to make plays. He neutralized one and one blocks and was able to find the football. Also liked the emotion and effort that he showed.
Watch his HUDL Hi-lites and you will see much the same. Used his size and quick hands well. Pursued well down the line. Played emotion. Got to the QB.
The reason for the knee brace. Last fall he tore his LCL, which is the outside ligament. Only played half the season. Just started playing basketball recently. He gave excellent effort last night.
Really impressed with Gage’s drive last night. As he continues to get stronger and more mobile, he will become a more visible football recruit. Needs to do well in college camps. Needs to add some more good weight. He seems to be “buying in” to college football.
Really like his attitude. Really like his football skills. Really like his aggressiveness at the defensive end position. In a brief conversation with me, I like his character.
