Last Friday, I watched these two very, very good college football recruits play basketball for Pickerington North High School. Jack Sawyer (on the left) and Chris Scott (on the right). Both are solid basketball players, but both are two of MSR’s top football rated football recruits.
As I do with top football players in Ohio, I try to identify them early in high school and follow them through their senior year. Really hard to do, but I feel that it is important.
Former Pickerington North head football coach, Tom Phillips, introduced me to Jack in the spring of his 8th grade year. Watched him that summer and, of course, still do. The best word to describe Jack is that he is a “baller.” Aggressive, hustles, and loves the game – either football or basketball.
At 6’4-210, he can play a number of positions. Tight end. Outside linebacker. Inside linebacker. Defensive end. Like his speed off the edge. Gets thru traffic. Finds the ball. Can be a dominating force on the edge. Plays with a take “no prisioners attitude.”
Only a sophomore, he needs to continue to get bigger/stronger/faster. Needs to continue to work on flexibility. Needs to be able to re-direct. He will, but he needs to find time to work on football skills in the off season.
First saw Chris Scott in a 7o7 competition going between his 9th and 10th grade years. He had transferred from Wayne High School. Actually saw him play basketball as a 9th grader at Wayne. Guessin 6’3-180.
Excellent ball catching skills. Excellent concentration on the ball. Deceptive speed. Watched him make two unbelievable catches. Acrobatic catches. Chris just has the natural ability to adjust his body and to get vertical to make catches. Big play receiver.
Chris is going into his senior year. Needs to really focus on getting bigger/stronger. Really good speed now, but strength will make him even faster.
Jack is a 2021 Ohio recruit. Offers from every school. Met with new Ohio State coach, Ryan Day, this past Sunday. With his grades and skills, he will have some excellent football programs to choose from.
Chris is a 2020 Ohio recruit. Received an offer from Michigan. Could be special.
For me, even better, is that they are both “super” young men. Seem to be handling the “noise” out there that goes with being high profiled football recruits. Both have potential “big” time abilities.
