When I spoke to the Columbus Agonis Club two weeks back, I was fortunate to meet Whitehall QB Raymell Byrd. He was being honored by the Agonis Club as Central Ohio’s player of the week.
Impressive young who represented Whitehall Yearling High School well. Articulate. His parents were there, as well. Raymell thanked both his mom and dad for their support.
Currently Whitehall is 8-1 on the season. Raymell is the double threat quarterback who leads way. A natural leader on and off the field.
At 6’1-170, he can run or pass. Runs out of the spread. Sometimes – no back. Runs the RPO effectively. Reads well.
As a runner, he makes defenders miss. Has the power to run inside. Deceptive speed to run outside. Always trying to get north/south. Good vision. Finds the opening. Needs to get bigger/stronger/faster. Needs to improve burst.
Accurate passer. Finds the open receiver. Can throw the long pass. Accurate in the middle range area. Like his footwork. Sets his feet. Opens his hips. Here again, improved overall strength is huge. Especially needs to develop core muscles.
For the year, he has rushed for 1329 yards on 172 rushes. Averages 7.7 yards per carry. For the season he has scored 20 TD’s. Best of all, he is leading a team who is 8-1 and who has never really won, until last year. Raymell was the leader then, as well.
When I spoke with him, he was not getting much love from D1 football schools. Disappointing to both his parents and him. But he should be okay.
Raymell will have to get bigger/stronger/faster. Do not know about his playing quarterback on the next level, but he is an athlete, – a very good athlete, and an even better person.
Always enjoy meeting young men either on the football or off the field.
