I do not see that many high school basketball games throughout the year, so my knowledge is limited on this subject. Subject being – football players should play more than one sport. Verified last night as I watched Toledo Whitmer against Toledo St Francis.
Six football players were on the team of fourteen. Not all played, but all or are playing basketball in the big school program. Actually, I believe that Whitmer is one of the biggest schools in Ohio. Six of fourteen – pretty good.
Jaesean Rader is the only senior football player on the team. More of a slot receiver in the fall. Good ball catcher. Had some burst.
Cavon Butler (2019) is a very tough, mobile defensive end on the football team. Listed 6’3 and guessing 270. Moves well. Probably will move inside on the next level. If his motor would run more, he would a top guy for me. Moves well on the basketball court. Athletic and commands space. A “big body.”
Zack Walling (2020) is a wide receiver on the football team. Really athletic. Jumps well. Strong hands. More of a long strider. Needs to get faster and improve his burst. Listed 6’1-190. A backup on the basketball court, but a varsity player in football.
Romelle Grier, another sophomore, is much like Cavon in size. Listed 6’2, but guessin about 260. Moves his feet well around the basket. Like his ball skills on the court. A back up in hoops, but a really good football prospect. Plays DL. Tough run stopper inside. Needs to maintain his weight.
Kobe Myers is a 2019 running back. Actually saw him play some varsity football his 9th grade year. Good athlete. Did not see him get in the game last night. Guessin 5’10. North/south runner in football. Solid runner, but needs to get faster and develop a better burst. Good high school running back and will play college football on some level.
The most consistent football player playing basketball is QB Riley Keller. One of the better QB prospects in the Ohio Class of 2020, and he is a solid basketball player, as well. A starter. Good shooter. Plays smart. Good leader. Guessin 6’1, and needs to improve his overall quickness on the court. But football is thing. Continues to mature as a quarterback. But he has the same qualities as a QB as he does on the court.
Every year that I watch Whitmer basketball, it seems that more than a few players play football. Good size and athletic. Better yet, they have the confidence that it takes to win and compete really hard.
By the way, Whitmer won last night. Whitmer won early in the season. St Francis won the second time. But it is now tournament time – Whitmer won the tie breaker.
Football players can help a basketball program and even at the D1 high school level. More important – football players should play two sports, if possible. FWIM – Riley Keller lettered and started in 3 sports as a 9th grader.
